Saudi council slams offenders of Muslim figures

[Al Arabiya] The Saudi Council of Senior Religious Scholars issued Saturday a statement describing anyone who insults Prophet Muhammad's wives or companions as a "non-believer" and prohibiting remarks deemed offensive to venerated Muslim figures.
"Non-believer" equals apostate, and all apostates must be killed by non-apostate Muslims. Such lovely people, those Saudis. Mr. Wife came back from his first business trip over there quite shaken; he'd been to other countries, and other Muslim countries, but this was his first Muslim fascist country. Subsequent travel to a great many other countries has not softened his response.
The statement, signed by all members of the council, headed by the kingdom's Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al al-Sheikh, warned that insulting the prophet's wives or companions is a direct assault on Islam.
What a fragile faith, to be sure.
"Respecting the prophet's family and companions is part of Islam and those who do not abide by this are not Muslims," said the statement.

The statement cited verses from the Quran that indicate the obligation of respecting Prophet Mohamed's wives. Because some verses in the Quran were about the prophet's wife Aisha, she deserves to be respected and "anyone who does otherwise will be violating the orders of the Quran and will thus be a non-believer," according to the statement. The statement cited an incident when the prophet was asked about the closest of women to his heart and he replied, "Aisha." When asked about the closest man, he said, "Her father."

The statement added that similar respect applies to the prophet's companions due to their closeness to him and the respect he had for them.

The statement came in the wake of several incidents in which Shiite scholars showed disrespect for Aisha and the prophet's companions. The most recent of these is the case of Kuwaiti cleric Yasser Habib, whose citizenship was revoked. Habib, who fled to the United Kingdom, is wanted by the Kuwaiti government. If brought back, he will stand trial for deriding religious symbols and threatening national security.

The statement pointed to Aisha as "Mother of Believers," because of her believed deep knowledge in religious affairs, which reportedly led one of the most knowledgeable of the prophet's companions to seek her advice.
Of course. She studied her husband's words from the time she was married to him at six years old, giving her a unique education compared to her sister-wives, who were not married until they were more or less adult.
"The number of the prophet's sayings reported by Aisha is the biggest amongst the rest of the prophet's wives," said the statement.

The statement also mentioned the incident in which Aisha was wrongly accused of adultery and for which several verses of the Quran descended upon Mohamed to confirm her innocence as well as set the rules for proving such cases, like the necessity of having four witnesses.
