Taliban Attack US Envoy's (Holbrooke) Helicopter |
2010-06-24 |
23 June, 2010 04:06:00 (date and time is important) Despite increased security, gunmen greet US special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, with gunfire and mortars, in Afghanistan. Afghan officials said on Tuesday that militants had tried to target Holbrooke's helicopter, a V22 Osprey, when it tried to land. Huh? Osprey, helicopter? Yea, I get it. And this reporter is covering the military? He was on his way to visit US troops and the governor of Helmand province in Marjah. Holbrooke is touring the country with US General Stanley McChrystal and US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry ahead of a large-scale offensive with as many as 150,000 US troops occupying the country. Everyone in the entire world knows McChrystal was heading to Washington on Tuesday, except this reporter. Go figure that. Officials said in a separate incident that three Taliban bombers were hiding in a shop near the place where Holbrooke was slated to meet with Afghan officials. They said the bombers were killed when their explosives detonated prematurely. No other causalities have been reported. The Taliban have not commented on the incident. Dumb report picks up phone, "Hey Taliban. Ya'll just shot down Holbrooke's helicopter. Would you comment on that, please?" I think this is the one and only time I'll post anything from this site! |

#1 Taliban Attack During Ambassador Holbrooke's Marja Visit June 21, 2010 Taliban gunmen tried to shoot down Holbrooke's V22 Osprey as it approached for a landing, triggering a gunbattle with the insurgents that lasted for about 10 minutes. And a trio of suicide bombers detonated themselves during an attack on the U.S. base as Holbrooke was leaving. |
