Presidential polls open in Colombia
2010-05-31
[Iran Press TV Latest] The Colombian presidential election has kicked off with an estimated 29 million voters casting their votes to replace President Alvaro Uribe.

The 10,271 polling stations opened at 13.00 GMT on Sunday. Nine candidates are in the running for the first round of voting, RFI reported.

Recent opinion polls have shown Social Party of National Unity's candidate, Manual Santos, and Green Party's Antanas Mockus, as favorites among the Colombians, Xinhua reported.

Opinion polls suggest an inevitable knock-out round between Santos and Mockus who each hold 35 percent of the vote. An outright victory would go to the candidate gaining 50 percent of the vote in the first round, which the polls deem unlikely.

Other candidates competing for the spot are Noemi Sanin of the Conservative Party, Pole's Gustavo Petro of the Alternative Democratic Party, German Vargas Lleras of the Radical Change and Rafael Pardo of the Liberal Party, Xinhua reported.
