Gitmo thugs might move to Illinois prison | ||
2009-12-12 | ||
Presumably, the inmates at Guantanamo Bay are there because they are believed to be a threat to national security. How moving them into the United States then is a good idea is beyond our powers of reasoning. While we are well aware of the Corleone advice to keep oneÂ’s friend close and enemies closer, weÂ’re pretty certain it wasnÂ’t meant as national security advice.

#16 play4keeps, as I doubt TW's elegant response to your doofusness made it through the Kool-Aid buzz, try this: Bugger Off. But please, please continue to visit and post. My grandchildren need to understand the meaning of "blindly following an empty suit".... |

#15 "Obama Administration has delivered up a small consolation prize: the state's very own federal prison for terrorists"... where they will, no doubt, vote in Chicago elections. |

#14 Why are you so hateful towards people that are successful? Just curious... How odd, given that some of us are quite successful as the world measures such things, and other are quite successful as the spiritual types measure such things. You sound like you are from the South or still listen to Fox News! Surely you aren't THAT dumb! Do I really? How wonderful! Because I grew up in a family of University of Buffalo academics, who learnt British English before they came to America and saw to it that their offspring learnt to read in Hebrew before we could read in English -- on which I blame some of my language use anomalies -- and then my husband's career took us abroad for some years. And then there was that nomination to Who's Who of American High School Students, for some unfathomable reason... Nobody has ever accused me of being dumb before. I feel quite, quite giddy! Thank you, play4keeps. You really are quite amusing today. As for that last bit, when one is nearly a year into one's term in office, it's definitely too late to indicate what one will do. One has been doing it, you see, and the evidence lies supine at one's feet... or not, as the case may be. Grammar is such a useful tool for clarification, you must agree. |

#13 Pray4Something, your theme has been exposed as racist and treason. I don't think you have a legimate complaint except maybe the way your parents 'brought you up'. Keep posting, I do like a larf at your expense! |

#9 Get his daughters a puppy He promised he was going to get a pound puppy for his kids. How plebeian. So much for that promise and the others as well. Play4keeps has drunk deeply of some kind of acid-laced Kool Aide. Maybe he/she will wake up some day. I don't have much hope for this change. |

#8 “How moving them into the United States then is a good idea is beyond our powers of reasoning.” The rationale, of course, is that GITMO is a major tool for Jihadist recruitment. The problem with this argument is, with the exception of anecdotal speculation, there is no empirical evidence to support such a claim. Also absent is any proof that the closure will result in a recruitment reduction. And lacking said evidence makes it impossible to measure the effects of this policy either way. Which explains why the Obama administration has such a penchant for symbolic gestures. It allows them to claim accomplishment without having to neither substantiate the problem nor quantify the solution. |

#5 "Tantamount" is nice. I was tantamounted once. I was eleven and slipped in to see "Lash LaRue and the Whip Lady" for a dime. Remember Lash LaRue? He was a cowboy who carried a Bullwhip. Those were the days. The guy who ran the Theatre gave me and Veena Woodard a special price. Things were slow. |

#4 Nice, TW. Some of these 'promises kept' sound a bit hollow: No. 125: Direct military leaders to end war in Iraq Yep. I told 'em. No. 132: No permanent bases in Iraq Not yet, anyway. No. 167: Make U.S. military aid to Pakistan conditional on anti-terror efforts But this one is not hollow. No. 174: Give a speech at a major Islamic forum in the first 100 days of his administration No. 222: Grant Americans unrestricted rights to visit family and send money to Cuba No. 239: Release presidential records But not have social secretaries testify before Congress. No. 327: Support increased funding for the NEA 'nuff said. No. 337: Use the International Space Station for fundamental biological and physical research Instead of just being a sparkly thing in the sky. No. 338: Explore whether International Space Station can operate after 2016 And what was the answer, O? No. 342: Work toward deploying a global climate change research and monitoring system We got one of those - CRU. No. 359: Rebuild schools in New Orleans That's generous of him. No. 380: Bolster the military's ability to speak different languages No. 452: Weatherize 1 million homes per year I wonder how they consider this a promise kept? There is text justifying their assertions... No. 483: Invest in public transportation And the most important: No. 502: Get his daughters a puppy |

#2 Dear play4keeps, Guantanamo is not yet closed. We are most definitely still in Iraq, just as we are still in Germany, Japan, Italy, and South Korea. How do you know none of our people have tortured anyone recently? For that matter, how do you know that our people ever tortured anyone? "Tantamount to torture" is not anything like "torture", either legally or morally, I'm afraid. And the New York Times, unfortunately, has demonstrated a habit of hiring fabulists as well as outstanding reporters, and being quite, quite unable to distinguish between them so long as the prose is exquisite. You are zero for three in your post above. So I'm afraid I feel no drive to check how many of the sixty accomplishments poor President Obama also did not actually accomplish. As for being accomplished, I'm afraid he has not, to my knowledge, demonstrated mastery of any of the arts or foreign languages traditionally referred to when describing one as accomplished. Perhaps you meant to use a different word. Yours sincerely, |

#1 Yes, Guantanamo is being closed just as promised, we withdrew from Iraq as promised. He never promised prosecution for torture, just that he would end it, which he did. Here are 68 accomplishments of Obama so far, about 30 more than Bush did in 8 years... Obama is at 10 months! So he's our most accomplished President we've ever had this early into his term. the list is here: (copy/paste/remove spaces) snipurl. com /nbx6u Or Google: Obama Meter |
