Roadside bomb kills eight Afghan civilians |
2009-10-31 |
[Dawn] A roadside bomb struck a station wagon in Afghanistan on Friday, killing eight civilians, including a woman, a provincial government spokesman said. The vehicle was travelling through the Khwarano area of Khogyani district in eastern Nangarhar province, which shares a long porous border with Pakistan. 'Eight civilians, including one woman, were killed in the roadside bomb explosion,' Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the provincial governor's office, told AFP. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but Taliban insurgents who are waging a bloody campaign against Western forces in Afghanistan frequently plant similar explosives along main roads. Abdulzai blamed the attack on 'enemies of Afghanistan', a term often used to refer to the Taliban. Nangarhar is one of Afghanistan's most prosperous provinces and is located on the main highway between the capital Kabul and the Pakistani border. |
