De facto military court sentences PA policeman to death for treason |
2009-10-30 |
[Ma'an] Ma'an -- A de facto government military court in Gaza issued its second death penalty ruling in as many months on Thursday, sentencing an Az-Zaitun resident to death by firing squad. The convicted, identified as 35-year-old Abed Al-Karim Mohammad Al-Abed Sharir, worked for the Palestinian Authority police in Gaza, and was found guilty of treason under articles (131/a), (140/b), (148) of the Palestinian Revolutionary Law (1979). Mohammad was also found guilty of manslaughter under articles (378/ a) and (88/a) of the same code. According to article (415) of the penalty procedures (3) for the year 2001, the court said, his punishment would be death by firing squad and can be petitioned. The Palestinian Center for Human Rights earlier noted that the 1979 Palestinian Penal Law "is the Revolutionary Penal Code of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It is unconstitutional within the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) as it has not been presented to, nor approved by, the legislature." |
