Obama Nobel win shocks Swedish peace group

The Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (Svenska Freds) has classified as "shameful" the decision by the Nobel Committee in Oslo to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 to Barack Obama.

"The choice of Barack Obama as the recipient of the world's foremost peace prize is shocking," said the group's chairwoman Anna Ek in a statement. Ek conceded that the US president had sent "positive signals" with regard to his future commitment to global peace. "But at the same time Obama is the president of the biggest military power in the world and is waging two wars in the world. That should certainly disqualify him from a peace prize," said Ek.

Social Democrat press spokesman Urban Ahlin also confessed to being caught off guard by the award. "I was quite surprised I have to say. The efforts Barack Obama has made for peace do not currently correspond to a peace prize," he told news agency TT.
My opinion of the intelligence and good sense of Scandanavian peace hippies has gone up a bit after reading this.

#10  Obama couldn't bring the Olympics to his hometown, but as a direct result of his policies George W. Bush brought home 3 peace prizes (Carter, Gore, Obama) and two oscars (Moore, Gore).

Not the mention that on the same day he launched an unprovoked attack by bombing the Moon. [White House spokesmen replied that it was all planned during the Bush Administration.]

#8   One can only imagine the sacrifices Obama and his teleprompter will make in accepting this award.

let TOTUS speak

That's Nobel-Prize Winning Teleprompter to You ...

Wow. What I can I say. Wow. I'm honored. Clearly Big Guy - who can't stop dancing on the bed up in the residence right now, by the way - won this award for his speeches. I mean, after nominating himself for the Nobel Prize for Peace two weeks after entering the office of the Presidency, let's face it, it isn't like he had anything to show for it.

He said if he'd known it was this easy to win a Nobel, he would have nominated himself for the Nobel Prize for Literature years ago for his 5th Grade essay on "Raisin the Sun" (of course, he would have had to share that prize with Billy Ayers). Or his yeast science project from 7th grade for the Nobel Prize for chemistry.

There's so much to do now before the awards ceremony in Oslo. I'm going to have to buy a white tie and tails, and really get a good, high-gloss screen polishing for the awards ceremony. Big Guy is hoping that after accepting the Nobel for peace, if he gives a really good speech, they'll give him a second Nobel for talking, because he's really earned that one.

Members of the Committee who awarded Dear Leader the prize

This was decided by five people, four of them women, on the day after Dear Leader said Talibanis should be part of an Afghan government?

#4  Elie Wiesel was shocked, too, as expressed in an interview on NPR this morning. But he temporized that President Obama changed the world simply by allowing America to elect him as the first Black president.

#1  I'm not shocked by this. I was shocked by El Baradei receiving it, the same year North Korea went nuclear, and Iran began enriching uranium.
