UK unemployment rate hits 13-year high

[Iran Press TV Latest] Official figures show that unemployment in the United Kingdom is now at its highest level with a total number of 2.44 million people being out of jobs.

The latest unemployment rate, calculated according to the International Labor Organization (ILO) method, stood at the highest level since November 1996.

According to the ILO measure, recession claimed another 220,000 jobs in the three months the preceded June.

This is while the Office for National Statistics has announced that about 2,500 people are losing their jobs a day and the number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance in July rose by 24,900 to 1.58 million.

Commenting before the latest numbers were released, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson described unemployment levels as "unacceptable".

The new UK unemployment figures will now place further pressure on the authorities to take constructive steps to revitalize the recession-affected economy.
