AFGHANISTAN – Two more Canadian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, the sixth and seven fatalities for Canadian forces fighting in the country since the beginning of July. Corporal Christian Bobbitt, 23, of the Royal 22nd Regiment based in Valcartier, Quebec, and another unnamed soldier died when an improvised explosive device exploded as they were on patrol 15 km west of Kandahar, in the Zhari District at 3:20 p.m. Afghanistan time Saturday. A third soldier who was wounded in the blast was airlifted to hospital at the Kandahar airfield and is in stable condition, according to the Department of National Defence (DND). Next of kin of the second soldier killed Saturday have been notified but have asked DND to withhold release of the victim’s name until other family members can be identified. The latest fatalities bring to 127 the number of fatalities for Canadian soldiers since they began their Afghanistan mission in 2002. |
