Turkey: Air attacks target Kurdish militants in Iraq |
2009-05-01 |
[ADN Kronos] Turkey's military said it had launched air strikes against suspected separatist militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) bases in northern Iraq on Thursday. The air attacks which began overnight took place after nine Turkish soldiers were killed by a bomb in the country's southeast on Wednesday. The PKK, which has been fighting a 25-year war for a separate Kurdish state, claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attack. Two Turkish soldiers were also injured in a firefight with PKK in the central province of Tunceli, according to military sources. The military frequently carries out air operations against PKK rebels based in neighbouring Iraq, from where the guerrillas launch attacks on Turkish security forces. |
