2008-10-30 |
![]() (SomaliNet) Three Nigerians have been detained after forging the governor's signature to try to steal $27 million from its international account, Ethiopia's central bank, the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), said on Tuesday. According to the bank, it was informed by Citibank earlier this month of a $27 million drop in its account. "NBE immediately brought to the attention of Citibank, it had not endorsed any payment and that larceny had happened," it said in a statement. Citibank returned the money and a probe ensued. "Three Nigerian nationals were detained as they allegedly went to a bank in South Korea to withdraw the $27 million, under a forged signature of Tekelewold Atnafu, the governor of NBE," the Ethiopian central bank said. Ethiopia's foreign deposits are used to pay debt and government procurements, the statement said. |
