An armed group in Somalia has released the local UN refugee agency chief who was seized in June near Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, the refugee agency said. The UNHCR said on Wednesday it was "pleased" with the release of Hasan Mohamed Ali Keynan who was abducted from his home near the war-riven Mogadishu by unidentified gunmen. "Ali is in good health and preparations are underway to reunite him with his family A UN official in Mogadishu told the AFP news agency that Keynan had arrived at the UN compound in the capital. "His kidnappers gave a call to the UN headquarters in the afternoon telling staffers that they released Mr Keynan," the official said. Several aid workers have been seized this year in the lawless nation by gunmen who often demand hefty ransoms. The UNHCR said it would nonetheless continue to provide aid to displaced Somali civilians. |
