Kirkuk blast toll reaches 22 dead, 150 wounded |

(VOI) -- Casualties from the suicide blast that targeted a crowd of demonstrators in downtown Kirkuk city earlier today have reached 172, a local police chief said on Monday. "The toll has risen to 22 dead and 150 wounded, all civilians," Brigadier Sarhad Qadir told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI). Earlier today the assistant police chief in Kirkuk, Colonel Salar Khaled, told VOI that 13 persons were killed and 79 others, including Yahia al-Barzanji, an Associated Press photographer, Simon Mohammed, a photographer for the satellite Baghdad channel, were wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up among a crowd of demonstrators in downtown Kirkuk. More than five thousand people took to the streets in Kirkuk, condemning the passage of the provincial council elections law, which includes an article postponing the city's elections. |
