Journalist says VP's bodyguard threatened to kill him
2008-07-07
(VOI) -- The Journalistic Freedoms Observatory (JFO) denounced 'the assault by Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashimi's bodyguards on journalists' in Kirkuk on Sunday. 'A bodyguard of Vice President Tareq al-Hashimi threatened to kill me,' Adnan al-Djaf, the correspondent of al-Hurriya TV channel, told Aswat al-Iraq -- Voices of Iraq -- (VOI).

Speaking over the phone with the JFO, Djaf said he and a number of other satellite channel correspondents including al-Iraqiya, al-Sumeriya, Kurdistan TV, Ashtar, al-Boghdadiya, Biladi and al-Furat as well as Radio Nawa and Reuters have entered the Kirkuk provincial council building to cover a press conference Hashimi was to hold. 'I've found out that our channel sign was removed and others of Arab satellite channels replaced it. I objected this attitude and demanded equality with the other colleagues in those channels but I was intercepted by one of Hashimi's guards who threatened to kill me,' Djaf told JFO.

The JFO, condemning the incident, appealed to Vice President Hashimi to investigate the guard and offer proper apology for them. A media source in Hashimi's office denied any assaults on journalists, noting 'there was neither physical nor verbal assault on journalists, but only a squabble.'

#1  From the headline, I thought this was about Cheney. But Cheney would have told him himself.
