Norway: "Osama" bomb threat forced offshore platform evacuation |
2008-07-04 |
An offshore platform being built at the Aker Stord yard in western Norway was evacuated Thursday afternoon, after a written bomb threat was found on it. As many as 1,000 workers were evacuated and brought to safety after a note was found on the platform reading (in English): "There is a bomb down here." The note was signed "Osama" and dated "9/11." Police immediately sent for a group of bomb experts from Oslo to investigate the threat. Anne Oliversen of the Haugaland / Sunnhordaland Police District said the police had no choice but to take the threat seriously, "but we hope of course that this is a bad joke." Jan Lindbæk, communications chief for Aker Solutions, which owns the yard, said he had few details about the action in western Norway but could confirm that all workers were evacuated. |
