NWFP govt-TTP peace talks underway: minister
2008-05-04
The NWFP government has said talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to bring peace to the FATA and NWFP are in progress, despite the TTP’s announcement talks had failed. “The NWFP government is in constant contact with the FATA and Swat militants to bring peace to the troubled areas of the country,” NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain told Daily Times on Saturday.

Conversely TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud announced an end to negotiations on Saturday, saying the Taliban would not engage in dialogue until troop withdrawal from the Tribal Areas was complete, reported Geo TV.

On April 28 the TTP had also announced that talks with the government had failed, after the latter’s refusal to withdraw troops from FATA and Swat – a demand the TTP claimed was earlier accepted.

Hussain however said the withdrawal of troops from the troubled areas was possible only after a ceasefire and agreement between the two was reached. “It will take some time and needs continued efforts, which the NWFP government has started,” Hussain said.
