Security forces in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) shot and killed a senior leader of militant group Harkatul Mujahideen late on Tuesday, police said.
Police identified the dead militant as Sajad Afghani, “chief operations commander” of Harkat. Afghani was killed in an abandoned hospital building in Sopore town, north of Srinagar, a day after the “financial chief” of Hizbul Mujahideen, the region’s main militant group, was shot dead, police reported. A policeman and a suspected militant were shot dead south of Srinagar on Tuesday, according to police. Harkatul Mujahideen has been fighting against Indian troops for more than a decade in the Himalayan region. This year nearly a dozen senior militants have been killed during gun battles in the troubled region, according to police. |
