Fazl backs ANP over talks with militants | |

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief on Thursday announced his backing for the Awami National Party (ANP) in its pledge to seek a peaceful solution to the ongoing insurgency in the Tribal Areas. There has been fierce fighting between security forces and pro-Taliban militants in the Tribal Areas since July last year, when the September 2006 peace deal between the Taliban and government collapsed. It was the JUI-F that, for the first, advocated talks with disgruntled groups in the Tribal Areas, party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman told reporters here. “We praise the ANP for its pledge to pursue a peaceful solution to the problems of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA),” he said. Tribesmen, Fazl added, were “peace-loving” people.
