Islam is more than simply the world's most popular religion. It is a cause, Noni Darwish suggested, one that lies at the root of the unrest prevalent in the Middle East. Darwish, an author who grew up in Egypt only to later renounce the radical forms of Islam she believes form the foundation of terrorist organizations, told a nearly full Durham Hall crowd at Casper College Thursday that Islamic countries are chiefly focused on a singular goal of making the world adhere to their customs and cultures. She said they're turning a blind eye to problems in their own countries that have an oppressive outcome on the lives of people living there. Darwish, the daughter of the first leader of Fedayeen guerilla operations that sought to oust Jews from Egypt, told the crowd that speaking for human rights in Islamic countries "is taboo, with serious consequences." |
