| India develops medium-range multi-platform missile |

| India is developing a new medium-range, multi-platform missile, calling it Nirbhay, scheduled to be test-fired by end of 2009. The missile, with a range of 1,000 km, is being developed at the Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) of the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Director of ASL Avinash Chander told news agency Indo Asian News Service Tuesday at Southern Indian city of Hyderabad. "Every country needs multiple options. It is a question of survival," Chander stressed. "Nirbhay will be better than Babur missile," Chander told the news agency, referring to Pakistan's subsonic missile, developed originally with a 500 km range and later upgraded to 700 km. Nirbhay is the latest addition in the series of Indian missiles -- "Agni I, II and III", "Prithvi I and II", "Brahmos", "Akash", "Trishul" and "Nag". Nirbhay weighs 1,000 kg with a 1,000 km range and a speed of 0.7 mach. Nirbhay is six metres in length with a 520 mm diameter. Nirbhay will have multiple platforms and can be launched from ground, sea and air. "While the missile is being developed indegenously, India is looking at partnerships for the engine," said Chander. |
