#1 Security has sharply deteriorated in Afghanistan since late 2004 when many US troops were evacuated to Iraq. A resurgent Taliban have made deadly strikes on government facilities including schools, and on foreign troops. The nearly daily attacks, which began in the southern provinces along the country's border with Pakistan, have spread to the east.
And it seems the Karzi government is not doing enough for the people in the hinterlands, where the drug trade flourishes under the Taliban. So I guess this is a quagmire, too, as the folks will increasingly support the Taliban - they know how to control things!
