A very long article by Christopher Hitchens, but well worth the read
The London neighborhood of the author's youth, Finsbury Park, is now one of the breeding grounds for a new phenomenon: the British jihadist. How did a nation move from cricket and fish-and-chips to burkas and shoe-bombers in a single generation?

Dead or converted, don't matter.

#11  It was late last night when I came across this story and forgot to note the source for the link.

Just wanted to offer a well deserved Hat Tip to LGF.

#10  While I am not yet at the "The only good Muslim is a dead Muslim"

Neither am I. I'm, and has been since serving in Intifada-I, at "Dangerous Muslim vs non-dangerous Muslim" state of mind.

#9  Bad Muslims vs Worse Muslims. In the UK we drew the short straw, and got the latter.

Q): Do you know why San Francisco got all the gays and Washington D.C. got all the lawyers?

A): San Francisco had first choice.

#8  Great analysis, John Frum. The British seem incapable of admitting that one of their prior colonies is responsible for unleashing upon our world some of the most vicious and uncivilized Philistines imaginable. Lack of edumahcation has absolutely nothing to do with it. Islam is the core of this issue and shall remain so until it is reformed or catastrophically dismantled. My bets aren't on reformation.

Here we go again: the famous "Good Muslims vs Bad Muslims".

While I am not yet at the "The only good Muslim is a dead Muslim" stage, it is now clear that Islam's complete and total lack of any redeeming features makes all Muslims bad by default. While some Muslims may well be peaceable folk, their intrinsic support of Koranic doctrine disqualifies them from modern civilization. Sharia law is a flagrant and egregious affront to all polite society. Muslims simply have no place in it so long as they hoist their bloodstained Koranic banner.

#5  From Hitchen's interview about this piece...

Is the British problem with terrorism different from ours?

Most of our [British] Muslim population is Pakistani. If that population was Indonesian or Tunisian the situation would not be the same. Pakistan has to export a lot of uneducated people, many of whom have become infected with the most barbaric reactionary ideas.

While he identifies the British jihadi problem as being Pakistani origin, his explanation is off the mark.

Other immigrant minorities, even other muslim ones have similar low educational levels.

The reason why Pakistanis are a problem is due to the unique nature of Indian Islam.

This is the only large muslim society where muslims were not a majority. This results in an enormous number of fatwas preoccupied with separateness, with existing as a muslim surrounded by unclean kufr. Combined with the sense of grievance over the loss of political and economic power, this produced something quite unique. It is also a template for the radicalization of other muslim minorities in the west where muslims again are in a minority and have this sense of grievance. It is not simply Wahabism that radicalizes. It is Wahabism combined with Deobandi sm.
The Pak maulana Maududi had enormous influence over Qutb and the muslim brotherhood.

You don't have islamo-fascism without Maududi and Qutb.. they fused elements of western fascism and the concept of the state with traditional fundamentalist islam.

There is a video of Osama in front of a bookcase, with an AK-74 propped against it. The books on the shelves - by Maududi and Qutb show the influence.

#4  Sadly, England is no longer the same country that I used to respect. With its slavish adherence to self-hating multiculturalism and its substantial jihadist subpopulace, it bears a strong resemblance to France circa 2006.

Personally, I found their public's reaction to Iran's taking their sailors hostage embarrassing, and Tony Blair's recent apologetic 'I did what I thought was right' speech was no better.

Hopefully the day will come when they rediscover their sense of national pride before their identity is effaced as part of the EU superstructure.

#3  Zen, there was almost never any usefulness of Chuck to begin with. You could probably count the incidences on fingers of one hand.

#2  Good catch, Delphi.

For the British mainstream, multiculturalism has been the official civic religion for so long that any criticism of any minority group has become the equivalent of profanity. And Islamic extremists have long understood that they need only suggest a racial bias—or a hint of the newly invented and meaningless term "Islamophobia"—in order to make the British cough and shuffle with embarrassment.

One would think that the blush was off the rose by now. With assholes like abu Hamza and Anjem Choudary openly calling for the deaths of Britons, the Pope and anyone else they damn well please, you'd think the limeys would have finally gotten wise.

Prince Charles himself, the heir to the throne and thus the heir to the headship of the Church of England, has announced his sympathy for Islam and his wish to be the head of all faiths and not just one. This may sound good, if absurd (a chinless prince who becomes head of a church because his mother dies?), but only if you forget that it was Prince Charles who encouraged the late King Fahd, of Saudi Arabia, to contribute more than a million pounds to build Â… the Finsbury Park Mosque!

Chuck has well outlived his usefulness in this world.
