I've been wandering around the Rantburg archives, and I happened across this item from September 16, 2001-- five days after the 9/11 atrocities. Fred quotes a New York Times editorial, in which the following passage jumped out at me:Americans now live a state of war against an irrational, vengeful and elusive enemy. And if we are to win, we will have to become used to the idea that we are in this for the long haul.
