Somalia: AU helicopters over Mog
2007-03-21
(SomaliNet) Two gunship helicopters belonging to the African Union Peacekeepers could be seen flying over the Somalia capital Mogadishu on Tuesday as overnight shelling killed civilians. It was for the first time that MogadishuÂ’s residents saw military helicopters flying over the city since 1995 when UNOSOM troops left the country. The people expressed fear that AU UPDF troops in the capital may launch air strikes on the unknown gunmen who, last night, fired nearly 30 mortar rounds at the government bases, including the seaport.

But Paddy Ankunda, the spokesman for the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia said no African Union troops will involve war with Somalis. Instead he said the AU would encourage efforts of bringing rival sides on the table to end difference through dialogue. On Monday the AU troops took control of MogadishuÂ’s seaport shortly after Ankunda revealed to the reporters that a ship carrying military equipments for the AU in Somalia was going to dock the port.
