Hundreds Protest U.S. Jets in Japan
2007-02-11
KADENA, Japan (AP) - Several hundred protesters gathered outside a U.S. air base Saturday to oppose the arrival of a dozen F-22 stealth fighters, the aircraft's first deployment outside of the United States. The demonstration was held outside the gate of Kadena Air Base, one of the largest U.S. airfields in the Pacific, on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa. About 500 protesters joined in, police said. The protest was peaceful, and no arrests were reported.

The stealth fighters, the newest and most expensive in the U.S. Air Force, were due to arrive from their base in Langley, Va., on Saturday. Bad weather forced a delay, however, and officials said they were rescheduled to arrive Sunday.

Tokyo and Washington agreed on the deployment, which is to last three months, as a means of boosting the U.S. military's readiness and deterrent abilities, and because they say it provides a valuable training experience for the fighter pilots and their support teams.

#5  It's Okinawa, you can get over 500 protestors if one of the Americans based there runs over a pet dog. The Japanese techs who worked for me in Tokyo told me the island is overrun with socialists, has been for decades.

Japan should start keeping track of these fifth-columnists....AFAIK Okinawa's turned the corner on the coexistence with our bases. As long as our guys stay off unwilling women...jeebus, is that too much to ask?
