Somalia: Mogadishu Airport To Re-Open |
2007-01-03 |
(AKI) - The airport of the Somali capital Mogadishu will re-open on Wednesday, sources with the transitional government were quoted as saying by Arabic web site Elaph. The airport had been closed since 25 December after Ethiopian jets bombed it. It will reportedly be open to all commercial and cargo flights that get permission to land and take off from the transitional government. Meanwhile, the transitional government announced on Tuesday that Ethiopian troops will remain in Somalia to ensure stability after the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) were chased out of the capital they had occupied for the previous six months. The interim government was created in 2004 in the 14th attempt to restore central rule in Somalia, which has been without an effective government since former ruler Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted in 1991. |
