Something tells me that the Social Engineers have chalked up, yet another, astounding success here. Their string is unbroken.
SCOTLAND'S reliance on methadone is failing to tackle the damage wreaked on society by drug abuse, it was claimed yesterday, as new figures showed a massive rise in the use of the heroin substitute.

A record 457,092 methadone prescriptions were issued to heroin addicts in 2005-6, compared with 408,877 the previous year and 45 per cent more than in 2001-2.

Methadone is intended to stabilise heroin users' addiction, satisfying their desire for the drug while removing the need for them to resort to crime and prostitution.
They are "broken" - we must Fix Them. Look, it's simple: substitute Addiction B for Addiction A, make them productive members of society, voila! And no, damnit, I have no idea why they call it dope.

#2  Years ago, a highly successful 3-drug technique which would get addicts of heroin quickly and keep a high percentage off for good. The first drug would put them into a coma for four days; the second would strip all remaining heroin out of their body; and the third would block the heroin receptors, preventing the effects of any new heroin. The third drug is administered monthly for a year, with counseling.

An estimated 1 in 1000 people who went through the procedure died, either due to pre-existing weakness or as a reaction to one of the drugs.

It was successfully tested in Europe. However, a strong and determined lobbying effort by the producers and distributors of methadone prevented even any testing to be done in the US. This is because methadone is extremely profitable as a government subsidized alternative addiction.

And though proven effective, Europe was also persuaded to discontinue efforts to develop, improve and use the 3-drug technique.
