| Syria lets Germany see Syrian-German terrorist |

| The German government said Monday it has gained access to a Syrian-German dual national who is suspected of recruiting the lead Sept. 11 suicide hijacker for al-Qaida and is currently standing trial in Damascus. Foreign Ministry spokesman Jens Ploetner said a German consular official has been allowed to visit Mohammed Haydar Zammar after Syria long refused access. Berlin "will now work to ensure that this consular access is maintained and that Mr. Zammar can have legal assistance" during the trial he now faces in Syria, Ploetner said. Zammar, 45, reportedly faces charges of membership in the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, which can be punished by execution under Syrian law. |
