Plutonium (and HEU) found in Iran waste facility
2006-11-14
International Atomic Energy experts have found unexplained plutonium and highly enriched uranium traces in a nuclear waste facility in Iran and have asked Tehran for an explanation, an IAEA report said Tuesday.
My only surprise is that the Mad Mullahs™ are this clumsy -- they ought to clean up better than this.
The report, prepared for next week's meeting of the 35-nation IAEA, also faulted Tehran for not cooperating with the agency's attempts to investigate suspicious aspects of Iran's nuclear program that have lead to fears it might be interested in developing nuclear arms.

And it said it could not confirm Iranian claims that its nuclear activities were exclusively nonmilitary unless Tehran increased its openness. "The agency will remain unable to make further progress in its efforts to verify the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran," without additional cooperation by Tehran, said the report, by IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei. Such cooperation is a "prerequisite for the agency to be able to confirm the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program," it added.

As expected, the four-page report made available to The Associated Press confirmed that Iran continues uranium enrichment experiments in defiance of the U.N. Security Council.

#20  Did they throw away enough Pu for me to make a test bomb with railguns for implosion instead of explosives?

Ya' know I might need a very small one someday. I mean like you never know when you might need some major weapons... It can't hurt to have my own ICBM?

Like the way it is now every country will get one in a few years and then rich will get them - I mean like it would be pocket change for Gates and I like use Linux so I might need to pro-actively protect my self from the Redmond Gates monster...

And then like what about Apple. They might not like the GPL and want to do something about GPL users....

Oh and when AQ nukes ChiTown I mean like I will have to respond in kind...

Hmm.. Maybe I could grab FermiLab - Its just a few miles away... I ought to be able to cobble a good weapon together out of those counter rotating beams....

This whole Proliferation thingy is going to require some deep thought.... Speaking of deep thought and 42 - why was that in base 10 I mean like 6x7 wouldn't be 42 in base 16 and iff it was base 16 or maybe 256 the street number of 42 would not be 6x7....

That's cold, .com.

#17  Maybe its the PLUTONIUM FUEL = TEST KIMCHEE indic at DEFENSETECH.org and OTHERS. FOX + CNN > IAEA can't guarantee that IRAN's alleged nuklar energy prog is PEACEFUL???

#15  Look, Lou, if you wanna impugn folks, it's best to be more focused and targeted. Ya gotta just got for it - shoot the moon, call a spade a club and get hinky, y'know?

You can't piss me off, for example - I'm pretty representative of the norm, with such vaguery. I'm too mellow for that ploy.

So go for it! Spit it out!

:-)

#14  Needless to say the very intelligent progressive types at WM didn't understand that.

Some here don't get it either.

#13  If you think they might be more careful look as some of the stupid things the Russians and even we in the US have done with nuclear waste. They are in a hurry to get the bomb and just don't care it's "allah's will" remember.

#12  Good point Rob. I had this argument over at the Washington Monthly, and I tried to point out that the U.S., with no prior knowledge of how to do it, built a working bomb in four years. The Iranians might not have Fermi and Oppenheimer but they have a road map. It's just an engineering question because the physics is well understood. They know how to build a bomb; they just need to build the technology that in turn builds the bomb.

Needless to say the very intelligent progressive types at WM didn't understand that.

#11  I thought it was going to be 10 years before the Iranians had this capability. What happened?

Seriously - does the burg have a search feature to pinpoint the pin heads who've been telling us (and the world) "don't worry, they're a long way from nuclear weapons"

#10  Hey, don't sweat it. We have a new congress and senate to handle little speedbumbs like this.

They are very practical people. If noone else seems to care, why should they? They don't have the wiggle room for PC, so they just do. :-(

#8  It was at the waste facilty. They were simply throwing away the bad stuff that can't be used for peaceful purposes only. Everythings okay.

#7  No. But Israel might be.

Islam is fairly notorious for leaving a mess in its wake. The term "nuclear waste" pretty much sums it all up.

#4  Wouldn't the Pu have to come from NorK?

You're assuming they don't want to let the world know.

Unexplained? I guess that depends on who's doing the 'splainin'. I think I could 'splain it pretty well.
