Car bomb in Baghdad kills eight, injures 38
2006-09-07
A car bomb killed eight Iraqi civilians and wounded 38 others in northern BaghdadÂ’s Qahira district on Wednesday, said police. The car bomb was detonated by a remote control on the side of a busy road during morning rush hour. A second bomb detonated as police cordoned off the scene of the attack, but it did not cause further casualties. An Interior Ministry source who quoted hospital tallies said six people were killed in the bomb blasts and 46 wounded.

Also on Wednesday, an Iraqi militant group led by Al Qaeda posted a web video on Wednesday showing the killing of two Iraqi national guardsmen, whom the group branded collaborators with the US-backed Iraqi government. The video by the Mujahideen Shura Council, an umbrella group led by Al Qaeda in Iraq, showed two men in military uniforms giving their personal details on camera while holding military identification cards.

The video then showed the blindfolded men being killed by a single shot in the head. Meanwhile, the arrest of Al-Qaeda in IraqÂ’s second-in-command took place in June, and not a few days ago as the Iraqi government had initially announced, said the US military spokesman in Iraq. Maj Gen William B Caldwell said Hamed Jumaa Farid Al-Saeedi, also known as Abu Humam or Abu Rana, was arrested on June 19. He said that other suspects had been arrested as well, but that their names had not yet been made public.
