Australia gives $12m to AIDS orphans |
2006-06-18 |
Australia on Sunday announced $12 million in funding over the next three years to improve the lives of children in Africa orphaned by AIDS. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the government would join with international donors to give five million children better access to education and health care in Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique. Mr Downer said many of the children had lost a parent to AIDS, forcing them to become the head of the household, and were unable to attend school because they were caring for a sick parent, or supporting their families. |
