Drive to eradicate polio continues
2006-05-07
If successful, polio would remain epidemic in only two countries, India and Nigeria And why is that? Perhaps because followers of a certain religion of peace are obstructing the campaign?
The World Health Organization plans to launch a massive immunization program this week aimed at eradicating polio in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Starting Monday, tens of thousands of health workers are scheduled to fan out across the remote and dangerous border areas of the two countries to vaccinate some 16 million children who live there, the BBC reported Sunday.

It will be one of the most demanding programs ever carried out by the World Health Organization. "It is extremely challenging to run immunization campaigns in these areas, extremely dangerous," a spokesman for the organization said.

If successful, polio would remain epidemic in only two countries, India and Nigeria, the BBC said. This year five cases of polio have been reported in Afghanistan and two in Pakistan.
