| #1 A Canadian colleague of Mr. Wife's told me the other night that much of Canada's prosperity and success (such as it is) are due to carryover from the last time the Conservatives were in office. He doesn't think much of Martin, who apparently was the Finance Minister for ten years under Chretien; thus, all the financial scandals about which he claims ignorance actually occurred on his watch either as Minister or as Prime Minister. The colleague professed to admire Chretian's intelligence and ability to wiggle out of every problem he caused, while thinking Martin "as stupid as Bush." He shrugged off my reminder of Bush's academic credentials -- typical ability to accept mutually contradictory memes. Fortunately, his job doesn't require that kind of critical thinking, and he isn't likely (in my opinion) to move to the kind that requires the capability to remember his former boss' wife's political leanings. ;-) |
