Unidentified gunmen riding motorcycles yesterday shot dead a well-known pro-government Islamic cleric in Afghanistan’s volatile southern city of Kandahar, police said. Mulla Ahmad Shah, a member of Kandahar’s Ulema Shoura — a pro-government council of Islamic clerics, was attacked and killed when he was going to a mosque in the city center, police official Abdul Ahmad said. Shah was giving religious lessons to students in a mosque which was built by the Taleban’s fugitive leader Mulla Omar. Ahmad did not say who might have been behind the attack, but a similar killing on May 29 of a leading cleric was claimed by the Taleban fighters. |
