The government plans to extend the mission of Japanese troops engaged in reconstruction work in Iraq for another year, sources at the ruling Liberal Democratic Party [LDP] said Wednesday. It plans to make a formal decision on the extension on Dec 8, according to a senior LDP member.Japan is considering withdrawing the Ground Self-Defense Force troops in Samawah, southern Iraq, around next May, but a one-year extension will give it flexibility in deciding the pullout timing in the event of changes in the situation there, according to the sources.
