| Arabiyat clan torn over whether or not to support al-Qaeda |

| The tattoo on Nidal Arabiyat's left arm revealed all the pain he came to know as a child when a car slammed into his mother and killed her as they crossed a street together, holding hands. "The world," it said in Arabic, "is not worth one teardrop." But Mr. Arabiyat's bitter sorrow eventually gave way to a more powerful force in his life. He, like thousands of other young Arab men, found religion and signed on to fight a jihad in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, where he became a follower of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia. With his newfound calling, he had the tattoo removed, painfully, because Muslims believe that those who have tattoos are damned. |

| #2 Mr. Arabiyat's father, Muhammad, tries to avoid talking about his son's conversion to the most radical trend in Islam, because his son is dead now, killed last year at 31, fighting in Iraq. Avoid talking = Ignoring Cause -> Effect The conversion began in 1998, when Nidal was 25, his father said. In an echo of his childhood trauma, it, too, involved death on the road. He and friends had been in Amman, drinking alcohol late one night, when their car crashed on the way home. Two people in the car were killed. Nidal suffered only minor injuries but grew introverted. He grew a beard and began wearing a traditional long white robe. He shunned his old friends, spent most of his time in the mosque and then, one day, announced he was going on a pilgrimage to Mecca called omra. Ah yes, per Dennis Miller: Isn't it funny how so many people find God only after they have painted themselves into a moral corner and made life a living hell for those around them. Nobody finds Jesus on prom night. This loon decides that the world is not ready for demon alcohol after he goes and screws the pooch. Quite obviously, jihad must be the only alternative. Way to go, buddy. Guess what? You're dead and we're not. Ha ha! Skoal! |
