Trial of 31 Yemeni Rebels to Start in August |
2005-07-12 |
The trial will start in August of 31 suspected members of a cell linked to rebels accused of plotting and executing attacks, judicial sources said yesterday. Yemeni prosecutors have completed the interrogation of 31 suspected members of the âSanaa terrorist cell... which was plotting sabotage attacks in the capital, and hurled grenades on staff members of the Defense Ministry,â a ministry website quoted a judicial source as saying. A woman, named as Intissar Al-Sayani, is among the suspects, it said. âThe files of the accused will be sent to court in August, following the judicial holiday,â it added. In May, Yemeni authorities said it arrested 20 members of the cell, which followed Badruddin Al-Houthi, the leader of Zaidi rebels who were involved in two weeks of fighting with government forces in the mountainous northwest in April that left some 280 people dead. This followed another uprising against the government led by Al-Houthiâs son, Hussein, a radical preacher killed by the army last September after leading a nearly three-month revolt in which more than 400 people were killed. An Interior Ministry report said in June that five civilians were killed while 28 others were wounded in several grenade attacks in Sanaa, which targeted Defense Ministry personnel. |
