Suspected bombers detained in Chechen train derailment |
2005-07-01 |
Two men suspected of carrying out an attack on a passenger train heading from Chechnya on June 12 have been detained, a source in the law enforcement bodies said. They reportedly belong to a radical nationalist grouping. The train was derailed by an explosion in the Moscow region, at least 15 passengers were hurt when six of the cars left the tracks, the ITAR-TASS news agency said. âThe train driver said that an explosion took place in front of the engine,â FSB spokeswoman Diana Shemyakina said. No one was killed in the incident when two carriages of the train heading from the Chechen capital Grozny derailed 150 km (90 miles) south of Moscow. Officials said two people were taken to hospital and more than 10 were slightly injured. Shemyakina told Interfax that a one-meter (three-foot) crater was discovered at the scene. She said investigators had also found electric wires attached to the rails. All the passengers of the derailed train arrived safely at the Paveletsky train station in Moscow on a commuter train, Interfax reported. The passengers were met by policemen and representatives of other law-enforcement bodies, doctors and psychologists. A regular passenger train link with Grozny has been widely advertised by Russian officials as a sign of normalization in the southern province, devastated by years of conflict. Separatist rebels, who attack Russian troops and pro-Moscow officials almost daily inside the region, also have a record of hitting civilian targets outside Chechnya. But President Vladimir Putinâs adviser on the region suggested that Russian ultra-nationalists could equally have been responsible for the attack on the train. âUnfortunately, there are a number of Nazi organizations who do not hide their hatred of people originating from the Caucasus region,â Aslanbek Aslakhanov, an ethnic Chechen, told Interfax. |
