CBS TURNS TO ENTERTAINMENT EXECUTIVES FOR 'EVENING NEWS' ADVICE

The development of a permanent successor to Dan Rather on the CBS EVENING NEWS has been shrouded in secrecy, but a meeting last Tuesday at the headquarters of the network's parent company, VIACOM, suggests that CBS is canvassing opinions from people well outside the news division, the NEW YORK TIMES is planning to report on Monday.

CBS NEWS executives are said to be disappointment that people from the "entertainment" side of VIACOM were being given a voice in the affairs of CBS News.

Who was at the CBS EVENING NEWS meeting?

Terry Wood, who developed the "Dr. Phil" talk show and "The Insider," a celebrity news program, and David Sirulnick, executive vice president of news at MTV, among others.

#10  Give 'em the old razzle dazzle,
Razzle dazzle 'em!
Give 'em an act with lots of flash in it
And the reaction will be passionate.
Give 'em the old hocus pocus
Fool and flatter 'em,
How can they see with sequins in their eyes?
What if your hinges all are rusting;
What if, in fact, you're just disgusting?
Razzle dazzle 'em, and they'll never get wise!

#9   Pappy - hopefully different from the stunt that jackass Rather tried to pull.

Hopefully. I wouldn't mind seeing Dan try to catch golfballs with his crotch...

#8   Considering Entertainment Execs are even more contemptuos of "Red State" America than news types, this doesn't look good for those who hope for a more balanced newscast.
On the other hand,it will be fun watching CBS INVESTIGATES-Spring Break! In a shocking Special Report our correspondents go behind the sun screen to uncover the shocking truth of Republican Youths gone wild!

#6  2b, I have no doubt that Viacom, inventor of MTV, will discover porn in due course. Redstone's after money, not prestige, and in any case the "Tiffany network" is looking more and more like the Kmart network. No ratings and no prestige, either. My money's on a sale of CBS to some crass Hollywood or Las Vegas joker. Or maybe Trump.

#5  God help me, but I am really enjoying watching CBS's nervous breakdown. Just when I think they can't go any lower, they underachieve beyond my wildest expectations.

Maybe they should just skip all of the intermediate steps and go straight to selling profitable child porn?

#4  Here's my tip for improved ratings:
1) Get Mary Hart to anchor.
2) Dispense with the desk altogether.

#1  Maybe CBS could have the evening news anchor do a jig as he/she signs off...
