AMSTERDAM The Dutch United Nations employee suspected of involvement in the bombings outside the British consulate in New York has been freed from jail.
The Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Friday the man is no longer considered a suspect in the FBI investigation. The man who works with the UN's weapons inspection team UNMOVIC was questioned by FBI and police after he was found "loitering" near the scene of the Thursday morning blasts. He was reported by some sources as drunk. | Only minor damage was reported in the explosions and no one was injured when the two devices were detonated outside the consulate at 3.35am (New York time) on Thursday. A chunk of concrete burst through the front door and a panel of glass was shattered. Police have not determined who was responsible or found a motive. Police said the explosives were placed in large concrete flower bowls, which also serve as a vehicle barrier to the building. The consulate is within walking distance of the UN headquarters in New York.
A firm which supplies bulldozers to Israel which uses them to destroy Palestinian homes is also located in the building.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it should not be assumed that the British offices were the target of the attack. Police said the explosives were about the same size as hand grenades and were made with gunpowder.
Additional: Kelly said investigators are also looking at whether the blast could have been related to an April protest by a left-wing Jewish group that was directed at the office of a member of the board of Caterpillar, which produces tractors used to demolish homes in Palestinian territories. Could be any number of left-leaning loonie groups , demonstrating against the zionist dozers of doom. | Police said the novelty grenades were filled with black powder, fixed with a fuse and left in the planter in front of the building. Kelly said a review of security video footage revealed a female jogger, a bicyclist and a taxicab near the scene shortly before the blast. He asked those people, as well as other witnesses, to come forward. He said one tape suggested the grenades could have been tossed from across Third Avenue. |
