Kazakhstan Passes Anti-Orange Revolution Poll Law

Kazakhstan's main opposition Asar Party has vowed to seek the repeal of a recent amendment to country's election law that would, it says, clamp down on voters' rights.
The newly elected parliament, dominated by President Nursultan Nazarbayev's Otan Party, had April 8 passed a bill apparently aimed at improving the election system but which imposes significant restrictions on the right to the freedom of assembly, the party says.
Nazarbayev signed the amendment law Sunday, a move opposed by the Asar Party, which is led by Dariga Nazarbayeva, the president's oldest daughter who is widely seen as his heir apparent.
"We are wanting to be a democratic country and the amendment is not the best development," she told United Press International in an interview...
The amended law prohibits rallies, demonstrations and public gatherings that are either organized by candidates or in which candidates participate in the period between the end of the electoral campaign and the official publication of the election results...
