Hundreds struggle to save beached whales |
2005-04-03 |
More than 200 people are trying to save a pod of pilot whales beached off the south-west of Western Australia. About 12 whales are being kept alive in shallow water off the coast of Busselton, after stranding themselves early on Sunday morning. They will be herded out to sea at first light this morning. Vet Paul Repton says while four whales have died, rescue teams are confident the others will survive the night. "They're all in good condition," he said. "They're not being too frantic or stressed in the water and they're all facing the beach. "Basically, we've got a number of volunteers for each whale, making sure that they're kept cool and moist - that seems to be working quite well." |
