The religious and sectarian identity in official documents is a source to fan religious intolerance and sectarian violence, said the Commission for Peace and Human Development, a non-government organisation representing religious minorities. A press release issue by the commission on Friday said that religious and sectarian identity in official documents was not required for a citizen anywhere in the world. "Instead the inclusion of these identities in official documents has promoted religious disharmony and national disintegration in Pakistan," the statement read. The commission criticised the government for what it called 'keeping double standards' like printing the word 'Pakistan' in English on the cover of new passports to globally portray the country as moderate and mentioning the religious identity in Urdu to appease the religious elements inside the country. The statement said the government had failed to take a firm stand on the religion column in passports. "The government should adopt a rational policy and observe international and human standards, " it said.
