Hollywood Fifth Column Hype-fest in NYC
2004-08-26
NY Post-gossip

August 26, 2004 -- GEORGE Bush-bashing celebs have joined forces with Moveon.org on a new series of campaign commercials. The celeb-studded spots feature the voices of Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Martin Sheen, Rob Reiner and Ed Asner and star Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Woody Harrelson, Illeana Douglas and Margaret Cho. Janeane Garafalo hosted Tuesday night's kick-off at Hammerstein Ballroom, billed as "10 Weeks: Don't Get Mad, Get Even!" Howard Dean, Kevin Bacon, Edie Falco, "School of Rock" director Richard Linklater and Al Franken fired up the faithful. Musical guests included The Roots, Natalie Merchant, Moby and Perry Farrell, who joined forces for Jane's Addiction's "Idiots Rule," in honor of the incoming Republican National Convention
If boobs were brains, this mob would be rightfully entitled to rule the world, instead of just pretending to be. Other than that, these pretentious semi-literate monuments to vanity are beyond parody. Can there be anyone, anywhere, so stupid as to vote for a candidate on the basis of some vapid movie-star pseudo-person's recommendation? Actually, it appears that there are many such people and that, friends, is one of the central issues of our time.

#25  My wife used to have Today on in the morning, but I hadn't seen Couric in about three years. Long hair? Short skirts?!? She is not going gently into that good night...

I'm an ex-engineer!

Casey Jones was a proud white man!

#23  The real exchange among Couric, Washtington, and Streep is pretty interesting in and of itself, with Streep setting off on a dogmatic religious tirade against GWB and Washington calling himself an ex-slave.
Washington, to his credit, tore Streep a new one over her simple-minded invocation of Jesus.

#22  Already noted, Anonymous, see #18.

The current "Manchurian Candidate" is as remarkable and obvious an example of ideological projection as I have ever seen, retro-red commercial exploiters stealing a lurid conspiracy scenario wholesale from a lurid commie-conspiracy scenario of the Cold War.
It's ironic, but not at all surprising, that this film is, itself, the product of corporate conformist manipulation.

You People - there is a 3rd possibility.

#17  It is an accepted FACT, that anyone who claims to be a democrat is an idiot. They know nothing at all about the real world. How do people get to be so damn stupid, yet think they're so smart??

katie couric is a hemorrhoid on the asshole of America.

Now if we could get only Samuel L. Jackson to wake his ass up...

#13  I got an e-mail yesterday describing an interview that Katie Couric (ugh!) had with Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep. The conversation turned to politics and Washington basically dueled it out with the two women. They were both steamed. When Katie (America's most loved TV dwarf - H. Simpson) said something like "That's always the way it is with you people" Denzel went off on her responding "You people!, You people!? Do you mean You People as in I'm a Christian or You People as in I'm a Republican? Didn't hear anything about it in the MSM? What a surprise.

#12  Kevin Bacon??? sigh...I used to like him. He seemed like he had a normal streak. Guess I was wrong.

Anyone else seen The Lovely? I thought it did a great job of portraying just how messed up, out of touch and narcissisistic the NYC/Hollyood types are.

It gave me insight into the mindset. They really see us as the clueless masses and themselves as the entitled simply assuming their rightful place in the world as the clever, witty, god-stars they (believe they) are.

#6  dave d

Actually I think many, maybe most, of them did not major in drama.

However, they did discover along the way to fame that 'getting noticed' was the way to get high paying gigs. They also tend to believe that the 'wicked corporation; crusading liberal journalist' motifs in classic films are some sort of truth.

Interestingly enough, the camera staff, the set creation staff, the wardrobe staff, etc. are tending more and more Republican.

So there are (as Senator Edwards could but won't say) actually two hollywoods. One rich, empowered, fawned upon, favored and Democratic. The other, hard working, abused by celebrities, middle class and Republican.

#5  "What is it about fabulous wealth and Hollywood that turns people into complete asshats?"

It didn't turn them into asshats; they started out that way. Remember in college, these were the fuckups who majored in Drama.

#4  Pity about Rebecca Romijn. Such Talent and Assets wasted.

JM, it's the Royalty Syndrome.

#3  What is it about fabulous wealth and Hollywood that turns people into complete asshats?
They are so insulated from normal American existence that they think us frightful proles actually can't wait for them to impart their wisdom.
So much self importance in one place.
