Bush and Kerry in Tie Nationwide, CBS News Poll
2004-08-20
Democratic challenger John Kerry has fallen into a statistical tie with President George W. Bush among voters nationwide, relinquishing a lead Kerry had after the Democratic National Convention last month, a CBS poll found.

Kerry, 60, a four-term Massachusetts senator, is supported by 46 percent of voters to 45 percent for Bush, within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The survey of 835 registered voters conducted Aug. 15-18 found independent candidate Ralph Nader backed by 1 percent. Kerry led Bush by 5 percentage points in a July 30-Aug. 1 poll, CBS said. Kerry's support among veterans fell 9 percentage points from the earlier poll, CBS said, down to 37 percent from 46 percent. Kerry today criticized advertisements being aired by a group of veterans that questions whether he deserved the three Purple Hearts, Silver Star and Bronze Star he was awarded during the Vietnam War. ``I think that veterans are beginning to learn that while John Kerry has voted against the weapons systems and body armor that our troops need to win the war on terror, President Bush has provided historic support for our military and our veterans,'' Bush campaign spokesman Scott Stanzel said. A call to the Kerry campaign seeking comment was not immediately returned.
They're too busy looking for a shower rod.

#7  ..In other words, Bush lied, Kerry lost. That's going to drive the Dems right up a tree.

#6  I think in the long run the Dems would have been better off with Dean. He had passion, and consistancy. Yeah he was a bit nutty from my point of view but he would have captured the left without trying and could have positioned himself on foreign policy better than Kerry is managing.

For example Dean could have said the war in Iraq has made things more dangerous for the US and had his own statements and stuff to prove he's always felt that way. Kerry is caught in the middle.

Dean had some fiscal claims of balancing the budget that although questionable are significantly better than anything Kerry has and they would have made the budget conscious conservatives think a lot about Bush's bloated budget.

In the grand scheme of things Dean would have lost, but he would have lost being himself and not trying to be whomever it took to be elected.

#5  4021 is correct. Instapundit demonstrated how Kerry's popularity was inversely proportional to his visibility in the media. But it is going to be hard for him to disappear for a week or two between now and the election. When will the Democrats learn not to nominate Massachusetts liberals?

On a related note, if anyone finds out where the old man is hiding the Norwegian-Iranian porn star, please let me know.

#4  The more people see Kerry, the less they like him.

Great Job Democrats.

#3  They will of course claim 3) Bush stole the election with the help of Cheeney and Delbold (or whoever makes the electronic voting machines).

Oh, and the man on the grassy knoll too!

God forbid that they admit that their polls are wrong.

I think a lot of people are looking at the SwiftVets ad, reading the book (if they can find int), reviewing Kerry's record vs what is he saying, and making their own decisions. Which is how it should work.

#2  Should W win in a landslide, will all these pollsters admit that 1. they are stupid, 2. they are biased, or 3. Bush stole the election!

You make the call.

#1  Nation wide, people are also starting to take a closer look at his voting record and his flip flops and thinking, "I don't like Bush, but this guy is a weirdo!"
