Sheik rails against Muslims' cell phones. Cites 'immorality' of devices playing Beethoven, Mozar
2004-08-05 | |
A TV talk-show host in United Arab Emirates has spoken out against the "immorality" of cell phones that play Beethoven and Mozart music in Muslim mosques. Sheik Said Al-Zayyati, who hosts a talk show on Al-Sharija TV in Sharija, UAE, lambasted those who program Western music as rings for their cell phones, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute TV Monitor Project, or MEMRI TV. The organization's site features a video clip of Al-Zayyati's denouncement. "My brother, these people [cell phone users], may Allah guide them to the path of righteousness, are destroying our worship," he told viewers. Does that mean the bump-and-grind ring tone is haram?
Defintely not this [an imitation of Hell's Bells] Muslims on pilgrimage to Mecca circle the Ka'ba as part of their rituals.

#7 Interesting that the sheik (isn't that Arabic for "jerk"?) is upset about the Western music playing in a "holy place," but not about the rudeness of the cell phones themselves going off. Nice to know he's got his priorities straight. |

#6 Sheik would have a freakin' coronary with Metallica or Pantera over the cell speaker, wouldn't he? |

#5 And while we're at it, we should ban all of these infidel devices! I declare a fatwa right now that cellular phones are haram! Allah gave men smoke signals and shouting to communicate over long distances! May He curse those who use modern conveniences! |

#4 Gotta watch those dual-use devices, eh Sheikh? We wouldn't want the Femalians to experience anything pleasant... |

#3 My fellow Shiek, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you, may I most respectfully remind you that we already banned the "vibrate" function of these kufir devices because too many good, pious Muslims were putting them in haram places on their holy persons . . . and women were hiding them in immoral places and calling each other repeatedly . . . |

#2 I thought at everyone at the Ka'ba circling gig is supposed to dress in simple white robes and leave all their worldly junk behind. The imam should not be railing against Beethoven and Mozart, but rather all cell phones at the gig. But what do I know, I am just a dumb infidel who occasionally issues fatwas on a whim. |
