Israeli forces and Lebanese Hizbollah guerrillas have traded fire on the border killing at least one Hizbollah fighter. The fighting comes a day after a Hizbollah official was killed in bomb blast in Beirut, which the group has blamed on Israel. The Israeli army says the gunfire began when snipers at a Hizbollah base near the border opened fire at an Israeli military position in western Galilee. It says helicopter gunships also fired at the Hizbollah position. Hizbollah played a key role in forcing Israel to end its 22-year occupation of southern Lebanon in May 2000. Hizbollah guerrillas took up positions on the border after the Israeli withdrawal and fighting has flared sporadically since then. |
