A LETTER threatening EU institutions in Brussels and The Hague was received at United Nations headquarters in New York a few days ago, Dutch Interior Minister Johan Remkes said today. The Dutch news agency ANP said the letter was signed by the al-Qaeda terror group, which claimed responsibility for the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US. The letter is currently being examined by the Dutch intelligence service, AIVD, Mr Remkes told the commercial RTL4 television station. The Netherlands has held the rotating presidency of the European Union since July 1. The Hague, the country’s seat of government, is home to the European police agency Europol and to the European crime fighting organisation Eurojust. Separately, Mr Remkes told the national ANP news agency that officials have tightened security around government buildings, after getting information last Friday about possible attacks from inside the country and abroad. |
