Terrorist Rebel warlord Gelayev not in Georgia - Shevardnadze
2003-10-23
Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze denies that Chechen rebel commander Ruslan Gelayev has bought a house in Rustavi and is currently staying in Georgia. "Gelayev knows our attitude toward him. He knows that the purchase of a house would work against him, and he also knows that Chechens must not cross the Georgian border," Shevardnadze said.
Unfortunately, this is the same warlord that Shevardnadze has been praising as a hero for the last year or so. The Georgians have made little if any effort to control the influx of Chechens and assorted jihadis.
There are no rebels or terrorists in the Pankisi Gorge, he said. Shevardnadze added though that "Three Chechens had been detained on the border, and they will be transferred to Russia." He did not say who the Chechens were.
Unless it’s somebody sufficiently high-ranking, I’m not going to be impressed. Abu Khabab, al-Qaeda’s resident mad scientist, is said to be hiding out in Georgia and brewing up all kinds of nasty stuff in that damned gorge, one of the reasons why I tend to side with the Russians on this one.

"he should know about our policies on real estate tax assessments, our lack of mortgage interest deductions etc. The man's insane if he's not renting!"
