Abu Ayat jugged in Baku and turned over to the US
2003-10-23
From Time Magazine’s Euro edition from October 13...
The last of the al-Qaeda operatives from Georgia’s Pankisi Valley still being sought by the U.S. was arrested in the Azeri capital of Baku in a secret operation in September, security officials in the Caucasus told TIME.
Unless they’ve already caught Abu Khabab and Abu Walid, I wouldn’t say that he’s the last. Abu Iyad likewise remains unaccounted for, though JUS said he was running the mujahideen in Iraq so perhaps he was killed during the fighting ...
Abu Ayat was an alleged explosives specialist who claimed to be close to Osama bin Laden and had been on the run for over a year. He was handed over to the U.S., local officials say, and has probably been transferred to Guantánamo Bay.
He’s a pretty obscure fellow, but he did merit a mention in Collin Powell’s UN presentation that lists him as a minion of Zarqawi’s named Abu Atiya.

#7  Allow me a minor edit to my earlier response....the Chechen in question (cited originally in the comments imbedded in the article) is actually Ibn Khattab (or Abu Khattab). He is the dead man. Abu Khabab is a totally different person. He's an Egyptian whose real name is Midhat Mursi. He is one of Binny's weapons experts. He loves to play with chemicals, explosives, and other nasty stuff and was last seen in the area of the Darunta complex in Afghanistan circa November 2001. He is still at large. Sorry for the confusion.

#6  Dan: Abu Khabab was KIA in May 2002. I have a photo of him laid out on a slab. He isn't smiling as he no doubt had found out by that point that the promise of all those virgins in paradise was b.s.

#2  Perhaps all the other Abus have already gone on to greener pastures, like Iraq, and the CIA has become aware of it.

#1  "The last of the al-Qaeda operatives from Georgia’s Pankisi Valley..." The last? Really? That's hard to believe. The Caucases passes are closing in Chechnya, don't the jihadis hibernate in Pankisi over the winter?
